Skadar Lake National Park is located on the border between Montenegro and Albania. Montenegro owns two-thirds of the lake while one third of the territory of the Republic of Albania. Montenegrin part of the lake, the surface of 40,000 hectares, was declared a national park in 1983.
Picturesque and unique Skadar Lake have settled in Zeta-Skadar valley, while retaining the Bojana river and the Adriatic Sea, from which it is separated in the distant past, a chain of high mountains.
With an area of ​​370 530 square kilometers, depending on the water level, is the largest lake in the Balkans. Separated from the other national parks as an area with distinct limnological characteristics, exceptional richness of ornithofauna and ichthyofauna and luxuriant vegetation, wetland type. It is one of the most interesting biotopes of this area.
The lake is a crypto depression, which means that some parts of its bottom are below sea level. Such places are called sub-lacustrine springs or eyes. There are about 30 around the deepest Radu, 60 meters deep, and according to some data, and deeper, while the average depth of the lake about 6 m.
Its coastline is jagged, with numerous bays, peninsulas and capes, mostly swampy, overgrown with reed. The flora is rich and varied.
